The General IELTS test is for people who wish to immigrate to an English speaking country such as the UK, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand.

All candidates must complete four Modules: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking Modules. Candidates have a choice between General and Academic in the Reading and Writing Modules.

The General Module is somewhat easier than the Academic one and aims to test language skills that are required in everyday life in the host country. For example, writing a letter to complain about a product or service.
