First comes the topic, then the argument and/or comparison, your ideas, your examples and explanations, and combined with your organisational logic they all add up to produce content with structure. Good writing also includes good spelling, punctuation, and grammar. If a native speaker consistently makes simple errors in spelling and grammar a university lecturer will likely just put a red line through it and not even bother to read it. If you are lucky, he will throw it back at you and tell you to do it again. Naturally, perhaps, a little latitude will usually be given to non-native speakers.
